We are thrilled to share that the official informational video of the EUROLakes project funded under the Horizon Europe Programme of the European Union was released on September 4, 2004 on the project’s YouTube channel [link to https://www.youtube.com/@EUROLakesMissionOceanProject].
EUROLakes is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at restoring Europe’s natural lake landscapes through a holistic, science-based approach. Freshwater ecosystems like lakes, wetlands and reservoirs are vital for biodiversity, drinking water, recreation and local economies. Yet, they are exposed to growing threats from pollution, climate change and overuse.
This video introduces the EUROLakes project, which brings together communities, scientists and policymakers to transform how we understand and manage lakes. At the heart of the project is the 4 Returns Framework, focusing on:
Inspiration: Reconnecting people with nature
Social benefits: Strengthening communities and governance
Natural restoration: Reviving biodiversity and ecosystems
Financial gains: Promoting sustainable economic prosperity
EUROLakes features innovative tools like the Integrated Water Modelling System, using digital twins and simulations to test restoration strategies. It also showcases Nature-Based Solutions at three pilot sites: Lake Vico (Italy), Lake Bistreț (Romania) and Lake Dümmer (Germany).
The project aims to scale successful approaches across Europe, promote ecosystem service valuation, and support sustainable financing for long-term impact.
