EUROLakes joins the Living Lakes Webinar Series

On September 23, 2025, members of the EUROLakes project took part in the Living Lakes Webinar Series, diving into the vital world of wetlands – ecosystems that quietly sustain biodiversity, regulate water cycles and store carbon at remarkable levels.

The webinar, hosted by the Living Lakes Network brought together experts and enthusiasts to learn more about how wetlands function and why they are indispensable for a healthy planet through exploring a wide range of facts, figures, visuals and examples.

Among the featured speakers was Aleksandra Starčević, EUROLakes Project Manager at Wetlands International European Association, who shared insights on how wetlands contribute to the resilience of Europe’s lake ecosystems and the goals of EUROLakes project in promoting nature-based holistic solutions for natural lakes protection and restoration.

Joining her was Udo Gattenlöhner, Managing Director of the Global Nature Fund, also partner of EUROLakes, who highlighted the importance of global cooperation and policy frameworks in protecting these ecosystems from growing threats such as land use change, pollution and climate impact.

Participants explored:

  • The diversity of wetland types and their ecological functions
  • The intenrational frameworks shaping conservation around their ecosystems
  • The urgent challenges wetlands face globally – from degradation to loss of biodiversity.

The event offered an inspiring reminder that wetlands are not just “in-between” landscapes but dynamic systems essential to both people and nature. Through initiatives like EUROLakes, collaborative action continues to strengthen understanding, policy and restoration of freshwater ecosystems in Europe.
