Between October 2025 and June 2026, bird monitoring activities carried out at Lake Bistreț in Romania, one of EUROLakes’ three demonstration sites, recorded 65 bird species, including migratory, breeding and protected waterbirds. The report explores how birds use the lake’s different habitats for nesting, feeding and resting, and examines how seasonal water-level changes and human activities affect their living conditions. The findings highlight the rich biodiversity of this Danube floodplain ecosystem and its importance for bird conservation.
The report also identifies pressures on wildlife, including fishing, hunting, habitat changes and other human disturbances. It provides an initial picture of the conservation status of the recorded species and establishes a baseline for continued monitoring and future restoration assessments. By combining scientific observations with practical conservation measures, EUROLakes aims to better understand the needs of Lake Bistreț’s ecosystem and support informed decisions that benefit biodiversity, the lake’s long-term health and the surrounding communities.
