As one of the EUROLakes demonstration sites, Lake Dümmer is showing how hands‑on environmental education can transform local engagement and strengthen long‑term stewardship for freshwater ecosystems. Ökologische Station Naturschutzring Dümmer e.V., which has been active for more than 30 years in protecting and developing the natural landscape around the lake and its moorlands, has built a powerful model for connecting people with their lake through direct experiences and shared knowledge.
In their 2026 public events programme, they have included so far 14 nature tours, ranging from birdwatching and amphibian tours to moorland walks and family activities. These events had been consistently booked out, demonstrating the high level of public interest in understanding and protecting the Dümmer region.
Events such as “Vogelkundliche Exkursion ins Ochsenmoor” or “Streifzug durch das Diepholzer Moor” invited participants into some of the most ecologically valuable habitats of the Dümmer lowlands. The program highlighted the region’s biodiversity, including meadow birds, amphibians, wetland flora and the dynamics of the moor ecosystems.
On the evening of one of their April tours, 27 participants joined a fully booked 2.5‑hour excursion from 18:00 to 20:30. The group observed a remarkable diversity of wetland birds – black‑tailed godwit, lapwing, great curlew, snipe, redshank, ruff and even osprey. These species are emblematic of the Dümmer wetlands and central to ongoing conservation efforts.
Participants also learned about:
- the ecological history of Lake Dümmer
- current challenges and restoration measures
- the role of the EUROLakes project
- ongoing research and monitoring
- flora and fauna of the wet meadows
- the importance of the nature conservation area
The atmosphere was enriched by the characteristic evening chorus of meadow birds – a soundscape that leaves a lasting impression and deepens emotional connection to the landscape.
EUROLakes feels related to these events as it aims to demonstrate how lakes can be restored and managed through integrated, participatory approaches. Dümmer’s environmental education programme is a living example of this philosophy through:
- Stakeholder engagement: Local residents, visitors, families and nature enthusiasts gain first‑hand insight into the lake’s ecological processes and challenges.
- Knowledge transfer: Events communicate scientific findings, conservation strategies and the importance of wetland restoration in accessible ways.
- Building responsibility: By experiencing the lake’s biodiversity directly, participants develop a sense of ownership and motivation to support protection efforts.
- Community empowerment: High demand for events shows that people want to be involved – an essential foundation for long‑term lake stewardship.
An interesting fact is that the Naturschutzring Dümmer follows a clear policy regarding event photography: no photos of participants are taken during these outings. This respects privacy, avoids the need for individual permissions and acknowledges that event leaders must focus on guiding and engaging the group. Instead, high‑quality nature photos, such as the black‑tailed godwit image by U. Marxmeier below, are used for communication and outreach.

Even when not visible in photographs, the wetlands are full of life. Many birds are already breeding or foraging in the shallow waters and wet meadows. The landscape photo below illustrates the current conditions in the Ochsenmoor fen, where the mosaic of water and grassland provides ideal habitat for meadow birds.

With a full calendar of nature trips – from amphibian nights to moorland walks, from family pond‑dipping to botanical tours – the Dümmer region continues to demonstrate how environmental education can inspire curiosity, responsibility and long‑term commitment to lake protection.
As a EUROLakes demo site, Dümmer offers valuable insights into how local engagement can support broader European goals for freshwater restoration and sustainable lake management.
